There are now 84 worksheets on Busy Teacher that address using used to and would to talk about the past. This worksheet is a group activity where students practice using used to; due to the content of the material, it would be best for adult classes but you could make up your own scenarios to adapt it for younger students. The activity itself is not very complex and since it is a game, students of any age should enjoy participating. All the materials and directions are included. For other activities, worksheets, and lesson ideas spend some time browsing through the materials in this section. Worksheets are usually rated and you can even read user comments to see what teachers have to say.
Used to and would are often, but not always, used to talk about the past. It can be hard for English language learners to know which one to use in any given sentence so it is important to practice this extensively in class before starting a new topic. Focus on one and then the other before doing exercises that combine the two. This will make it easier for students to become familiar with the uses of these words before being challenged to differentiate between them. Of course in some sentences either one would be appropriate so make sure that students know where the overlap is between these two.
