Spelling is a very important part of ESL so there are 248 spelling worksheets posted here for you to use if your students need more spelling practice. There are also a number of PowerPoint presentations to help introduce, teach, and practice spelling. This is one such presentation and goes along with this spelling worksheet. You can use these two files in classes of pre-intermediate and intermediate learners to help them focus on spelling ed words. If that is not quite what you are looking for, consider another free, printable worksheet to assist your students with spelling the words they are struggling with.
While the majority of ESL lessons should focus on oral communication, writing and spelling are also important aspects of language learning. Students may have great speaking skills but if business students send clients emails riddled with spelling errors, they are going to appear either careless or uneducated, both of which paint them in a negative light. Practice spelling with your students as part of vocabulary lessons. When introducing new vocabulary, be sure to teach not just its pronunciation and meaning but also spelling. Students will be able to practice spelling when completing writing exercises so tell students to pay special attention to it and assign a certain number of points to spelling when doing your grading.

Spelling is the writing of one or more words with letters and diacritics. In addition, the term often, but not always, means an accepted standard spelling or the process of naming the letters. In the sense of a standard, spelling is one of the elements of orthography and a prescriptive element of alphabetic languages. Spellings attempt to transcribe the sounds of the language into alphabetic letters, but phonetic spellings are exceptions in many languages due to several reasons. Pronunciation changes over time in all languages, and spelling reforms are irregular in most languages and rare in some. In addition, words from other languages may be adopted without being adapted to the spelling system, non-standard spellings are often adopted after extensive common usage, and different meanings of a word or homophones may be deliberately spelled in different ways to differentiate them visually.
