Welcome to the British/American section of BusyTeacher which is home to 70 Br/Am worksheets to help students unravel the differences between these two. While English is the native language of people from the United Kingdom and the United States, like other languages, it varies from place to place and there are some differences related to spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary between the English spoken in these two places. This Br/Am worksheet gets creative by having students match British English with American English words and then complete a connect the dots activity to reveal a secret name. If you would like your students to focus on different words, just swap out pairs of words for the ones you want to use. There are also other worksheets to choose from if you decide to try another approach.
If you have students that travel for work or interact with people from different countries, you should talk about the differences between British and American English. Students may be confused at first but you can explain that languages develop differently and just as many languages have different dialects, accents, and slang, English changes a little from one place to another. You will not be able to cover all the differences between the two but pointing out some patterns and assuring students that they can always either look up a word or ask for an explanation should prevent them from becoming overwhelmed.
