Teaching your students polite request is important as ESL learners will come across as being rude if they are not taught how to phrase questions appropriately. On the one hand simply being able to communicate their thoughts and needs in another language is a great accomplishment. One school of thought is that if learners can make themselves understood, they have succeeded. While this is true to some extent, as students progress though their English studies, they will learn more and more about what is appropriate in different situations and learning the importance of polite requests is a key step. This skill will improve their relationships with the people they communicate in English with. The people ESL learners interact with will be more receptive and agreeable if students are polite during their interactions.
