Earthquake Worksheet: The Adventures of Terry the Turtle and Gracie the Wonder Dog
This worksheet, called 'Earthquake Worksheet: The Adventures of Terry the Turtle and Gracie the Wonder Dog', was originally presented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and NEHRP and produced by agreement with Washington Military Department (Emergency Management Division). The 38-page book is intended to improve earthquake awareness among children by presenting a story about dogs from seismic patrol group and their leader - Shakeyville mayor named Terry the Turtle. Gracie the Wonder Dog, George, Abbey, and Nala volunteered to go to the Elementary School to teach students about how to be earthquake ready.
They started their awareness session by explaining how kids can help to prepare their classroom and homes for an upcoming earthquake and running the 'Drop, Cover and Hold' drill. Students were excited to practice and learn how to stay safe if the ground started shaking. The seismic patrol then continued by showing the importance of having a disaster kit and knowing what to do if caught by an earthquake when being outside.
The story continues by telling about an actual earthquake that happened in Shakeyville and how the seismic patrol group quickly responded and rushed to the school to check on students. Fortunately, the kids remembered what the seismic patrol team told them to do, and everyone was safe except for one student who had not taken the safety drills seriously. He was sorry he didn't listen what he was told and now believed that earthquake preparedness really works.
Although the booklet is not supposed to be taken as a complete guide to earthquake education, it can be a very helpful tool to start discussion of earthquake awareness and safety. The last page of the worksheet is complimented by a list of links to various emergency management resources.
