Devote the first 15 minutes or even half hour to a chain drill exercise where students have to introduce themselves with a positive adjective that begins with the first letter of their name, and then introduce the people who have gone before them as well.

This provides great pronunciation practice, and gives students a way to help native born people pronounce their name. This helps boost self esteem (positive adjective is a must!) and often students don't recognize that helping native born speakers pronounce and remember their name can really ease social tension. The exercise also helps the teacher learn the students names quickly and facilitates attendance taking. It can also be adapted to any level of class and the exercise generates a lot of discussion.
