Students come in having read something for that class period. Tell them they will spend two minutes “speed dating” five of their peers.

During the two-minute “date,” the students each share their opinions of the reading and then move on to their next “date”.

This is adapted from a concept of “speed dating”, in which a large group of singles spend a few minutes talking to each other before moving on to the next “date”. The purpose is to introduce oneself to a large number of people in a short period of time before choosing someone for a possible future, more serious date. Likewise, in the classroom, “speed dating” gives students the chance to get familiar with each other’s ideas on a text in a short time period and warms them up for more in-depth analysis of the same text later in the class.
